How To Buy A Bike When You Know Nothing About Bikes?

A lot of people don’t know much about bikes, and buying a bike can be confusing for them.

Seeing different types of bike models and not knowing where to start from is something that would always happen.

Going into a shop for the first time to buy a bike, it is normal to feel lost among all the different models, size and features when you don’t know anything about bikes.

However, once you realize that you don’t have to be an expert to find the right bike, then things would start to make sense to you.

All you need to do is to focus on a few important areas and you can find a bike that would work for you.

In this post, I am going to show you how to go about the entire process and how you can go to a store and buy a bike with confidence even though you aren’t an expert in bikes and bike riding.

How To Buy A Bike When You Know Nothing About Bikes

Knowing nothing about bikes shouldn’t stop you form getting a nice bike, if I can get a great bike without knowing much about bikes, then so can you.

Here is how I got a great bike without being an expert.

1. Decide How You’ll Use It + Identify Your Riding Style

The first step is thinking about how you’ll actually use the bike.

I knew I wanted something flexible for casual rides around town, but if you are just riding around, riding trails, or doing long distance rides, your needs might be different.

A road bike is great for pavement, while a mountain bike is built for trails.

If you are not sure, a hybrid can give you a bit of both.

Knowing how you’ll ride helps bring down your choices so you don’t waste time looking at bikes that don’t fit your lifestyle.

2. Set a Budget + Stick to It

I quickly learned that bike prices can skyrocket.

I set a budget early on, and it kept me from getting overwhelmed or tempted by more expensive models.

When I bought my first bike, I aimed for something affordable but durable.

The important thing is finding a balance between what you are willing to spend and the quality you need.

You don’t have to spend a lot of money to get a solid, reliable bike that will last you for years.

3. Choose the Right Size + Find Your Fit

One of the most important things I discovered was the importance of getting the right size.

I almost bought a bike that was too big for me because I didn’t realize how much sizing matters.

A bike that fits well is more comfortable, easier to ride, and reduces the risk of injury.

I found sizing guides online based on height, but visiting a bike shop to test out different sizes gave me a clearer idea of what would work best for me.

4. Consider Basic Features + Focus on What Matters

When I first started looking at bikes, I got distracted by all the extra features, fancy suspension systems, high end gear shifters, and a lot of other nice things of the bikes I saw.

But the truth is, as a beginner, you only need the basics.

I chose a bike with a simple, durable frame, enough gears to handle different surfaces, and reliable brakes.

Those are the things that make the biggest difference when you are just starting out.

Don’t feel pressured to get every new feature if you are not sure you need it, it all depends on what you are getting the bike for.

5. Test Ride + See How It Feels

After narrowing down my options, I took a few bikes for test rides.

That’s when I knew which one was right for me.

The bike that felt the most comfortable and easy to handle ended up being my choice.

Trust how the bike feels to you.

If something feels off during the test ride, it probably won’t get any better later, so test out different bikes till you find one that fits your every need.

6. Ask Questions + Don’t Be Afraid to Learn

At first, I felt a little shy about asking questions at the bike shop, but the staff was really helpful.

They walked me through the differences between models and helped me understand what I actually needed.

Asking questions is the best way to learn.

Most bike shop staff are happy to help beginners, so don’t hesitate to get all the information you need before making your decision, this would save you from a lot of frustration later on.

Recommended Gears To Help You As A Beginner

When I was buying my first bike, I also came across a couple of helpful gears that made the process smoother, and they’re great for anyone that’s just getting started.

1. Schwinn Thrasher Bike Helmet

Safety is very important, especially when you are new to biking.

The Schwinn Thrasher Bike Helmet is affordable, lightweight, and offers solid protection without feeling big or heavy.

It has adjustable straps, so you can get a comfortable fit, and the built-in vents keep your head safe and cool during longer rides.

I never hit the road without mine, and it’s a great option if you are looking for something simple and effective, and also on the cheaper side.

2. BV Adjustable Bike Kickstand

A good kickstand makes a big difference when you are parking your bike, especially if you are just riding around or stopping often.

I added the BV Adjustable Bike Kickstand to my bike, and it’s been really handy.

It fits most bikes, installs easily, and is durable enough to hold up on unsmooth surfaces.

It’s one of those small additions that make your rides more convenient.

Conclusion

Buying a bike when you know nothing about bikes doesn’t have to be overwhelming.

By focusing on how you’ll ride, setting a budget, and choosing the right size, you can find the bike that works for you without getting lost in the details.

That’s what I did, and it turned out to be much easier than I expected.

Take your time, ask questions, and trust your instincts.

With a little patience and the right approach, you’ll be riding off on the perfect bike in no time.
